Embracing the Unchangeable and the Uncharted

As an ardent admirer of Stephen King's work, I've delved into the realms of the Dark Tower, shivered through 'It', and pondered the haunting 'The Shining'. My all-time favorite film, 'Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption', is a testament to King's storytelling prowess. Recently, I embarked on a journey through '11/22/63', a narrative that poses a tantalizing question: What if you could alter the course of history by preventing the JFK assassination?

This thought-provoking premise has me contemplating the nature of time and the paths we choose. It's a common human tendency to dwell on the 'what ifs' and the roads not taken. Yet, there's a liberating truth in acknowledging that some paths are closed to us.

The Liberating Truth of Closed Paths

Tim Urban's graph on life choices at WaitButWhy.com illustrates the branching paths of our past and future. It's easy to become fixated on the closed paths, the decisions we can no longer change, and the sense of determinism they impose. However, every choice we've made was based on the best information available at the time.

Accepting the Inevitability of Some Closed Doors

Chris Guillebeau, a significant influence on my travels and the ethos of Nerd Fitness, recently discussed the idea of celebrating closed doors. While we often hear about late-blooming success stories, there are instances where it's indeed too late. Accepting this can be a form of liberation.

The Fluidity of the Future

Just as our perception of the past can evolve, so too can our future. It's not too late to pursue new dreams and paths. Bertrand Russell wisely noted, 'You’re under no obligation to be who you were five minutes ago.' Embracing this mindset allows us to let go of outdated aspirations and open ourselves to new possibilities.

Choosing Our Green Paths

Instead of lamenting the closed paths, we should focus on the green paths that lie ahead. We have the power to decide our next steps, whether it's starting a new fitness regimen, learning a new skill, or seeking help for a healthier lifestyle.

In the end, we can't change the past, but we can shape our future. Let's not waste our energy on regrets but instead, choose our next path with intention and enthusiasm.
